Woody biomass is an interesting source of bio-energy, which we can grow ourselves. Short rotation coppice with fast-growing willows and poplars is an area which holds potential for growth in Flanders. It is important to start and manage such a plantation with good care. Moreover an important legal framework needs be taken into account in the construction of such long-lived crop cultivation.
Short rotation coppice yields wood chips as its harvest product. These qualify for combustion for the generation of heat (and electricity). These chips have to meet certain technical aspects for proper processing. The combustion in plants of woody biomass is subject to a number of laws.
