Climate change, manifesting itself in among other things global warming has become noticeable also in Flanders in recent decades. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), man contributes with high probability to climate change. That contribution is attributed to the increased emission of greenhouse gases from human activities into the atmosphere (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), ozone (O3) and fluorinated greenhouse gases).
Other factors also play a role in the observed climate change: for example, the variation in solar radiation, the changing presence of dust particles in the atmosphere due to volcanic eruptions or natural phenomena such as variations in atmospheric circulation patterns.
