A frequently faced problem in trans-national monitoring programmes is finding a balance between international reference methods improving spatial comparability, and national analysis methods that favour temporal comparability by their use and testing over many years.

In function of pan-European forest soil monitoring, FSCC developed the ‘Manual for sampling and analysis of soils’, which provides ISO-based reference methods for all analysis. To obtain a view on the performance of the laboratories within the ICP-Forest Programme and within the BioSoil project, FSCC organises interlaboratory comparisons every two years.

Laboratories are judged on the basis of two statistics; Mandel's k (the within laboratory variance) and Mandel's h (the between laboratory variance). Next to the evaluation of the performance of the laboratories, the ring test searches for possible sources of variance, based on the information of the questionnaires.

The ring tests reveal that the variation between laboratories is large, and define the need for continuous follow-up and improvement.
